  Introduction                                                                                                                    

 

Can Tho University’s College of Rural Development (CRD), which evolved from the Hoa An Biodiversity Application Research Center, was founded on 28 June 2011 It is located at the Hoa An campus, 554 Highway 61, Hoa An village, Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province, about 40 km away from Can Tho city (1 hour travel by car). The total land area of the CRD is 112 ha on acid sulphate soil.

The CRD has a mission of human resource development, research, and technology transfer for rural areas, particularlyin the Mekong Delta. The establishment of the CRD meets the requirements for the education and training of human resources, and related scientific research in the Mekong Delta. This will propel the socio-economic development level of this region to match that of the whole country as well as other countries in the Asian region, an issue that the Vietnamese government has made a priority. Moreover, in the future, the CRD has the potential to provide motivation for upgrading and expanding the scale and impact of Can Tho University, and to create a modern, excellent education system that combines education, research, and technology transfer for development.

  Mandate, responsibilities and objectives of the CRD                                                    

-  The CRD has a mandate of organization and management of education and training, especially for the rural areas, and research and technology transfer to solve the scientific and practical problems for sustainable rural development in the Mekong Delta.

-  The specific responsibilities of the CRD are: (i) education and training on special majors and courses necessary for rural development according to rural needs; (ii) research and technology transfer for solving rural problems in various fields; (iii) providing servicessuch as consulting, supervision, capacity building, training and technology transfer for New Rural Village development.

The specific objectives of the CRD are: (i) to set up a college in the southern region of Hau River to provide opportunities for local poor students to easily attend university, (ii) to establish a complete college offering educationand trainingin all fields relevant to rural needs; (iii) to test the research findings in real field conditions, and set up the demonstration and transfer of new technologies and sustainable production models; and (iv) to provide services for New Rural Village development, particularly in the provinces of the Mekong Delta.
